One of the main rules everybody should follow when starting with webdesign is:
Create a website for users,
not for search engines!
As a communication consultant I have to emphasize this even more:
Focus on the content!
Because I have the over all communication concept in mind in which a website (or a blog) is only one element. An element that has to match with the others.
Once your content is structured and written in a clear and meaningful way, not only the users will thank you but also the search engines (se). Especially if your website is coded with a clear CSS design and in valid markup.
Of course you can still optimize a few things like keyword frequency, page titles etc. but that is step two, not step one.
Blogging content
Same with blogs. For me a blog is nothing more than a website in a different form. I am blogging because I want to exchange views and ideas with people. For the sake of content. If this gets me up in the se too, that’s fine with me.
Content?
Several times I was asked to make a website for someone who couldn’t tell me about the content they wanted to have posted there. “Content? I’m always asked about content? What do they want? I don’t have any!” a man wholeheartedly told me!
So if you don’t want a website for the content, what else could be your intention then? “Well, everybody has one,” he said, “So I want one too. And I want to make money”.
No matter how. Just do it. And do it good for the search engines.
If he had stopped for a moment and thought about the result of this, he would have realized that a good se position is meant as an incentive to click and not an end in itself.
Needless to mention that I didn’t take that job and needless to mention that “the man without content” didn’t have his business for long…
